Forklift training in Ireland: HSA and provider checks

A neutral checklist for employers and learners to verify course scope, truck category, workplace competence, provider claims and training records.

Start with the HSA Code of Practice

The HSA publishes a Code of Practice for Rider-Operated Lift Trucks. Use the current HSA material as the official Irish starting point. A training brand, card or certificate should not be described as an Irish statutory licence unless an official source establishes that status.

Training checks before forklift hire

Before a hired truck arrives, the employer should assess the actual task, workplace, truck, attachment and operator. A certificate for one category or setting should not be assumed to cover another. Confirm any familiarisation, supervision and site authorisation needed.

Refresher and conversion checks

Training pages often get treated as a certificate lookup, but the practical question is narrower: can this operator safely use this truck in this workplace today? Treat refreshers and conversion training as quote safeguards, not paperwork afterthoughts.

How to verify a provider claim

Ask for the legal provider name, trainer details, course specification, assessment method, certificate issuer, current approval or accreditation evidence, delivery location, fee and availability. Verify each claim with the named issuing body rather than relying on this page.

If a course claims to lead to a QQI award, check the exact provider and validated programme. QQI explains that provider approval and programme validation are separate requirements on its provider quality-assurance and programme validation pages.

FAQ

Does a certificate settle refresher timing?

No universal interval is asserted here. Check the HSA Code, certificate issuer guidance, employer risk assessment, insurer requirements and the operator's current competence.

Can I do the course online?

Ask the provider to state which elements are remote, what practical training and assessment occur, and what the certificate represents. Verify the answer with the named issuing or accrediting body.

Does my employer have to pay?

Use current HSA guidance and obtain advice on the employer's duties in the actual workplace. This page does not determine who must pay or whether funding is available.

What's the difference between RTITB and the older FAS / SOLAS forklift cert?

Do not assume equivalence, recognition or international portability. Ask the employer and certificate issuer to verify the exact certificate, truck category, assessment and current acceptance criteria.
